What is TEMAP®?

TEMAP is the latest innovation in Bi-PA’s development pipeline, a biofungicide currently in the final stages of development and pre-registration. This patented invention by Bi-PA offers broad-spectrum protection against a variety of fungal diseases in crops, providing an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional chemical fungicides. TEMAP is a contact fungicide with eradicative, preventive and early curative effects. In addition, TEMAP can be used in programs with other fungicides or in tank-mix combinations with systemic products. As a product based on natural substances, TEMAP supports sustainable agriculture while ensuring effective fungal control.

TEMAP was discovered and developed internally at Bi-PA. The active ingredient is based on pelargonic acid, a naturally occurring substance originally identified in the plant Pelargonium graveolens. This acid is readily biodegradable, breaking down quickly in the environment without leaving harmful residues. To enhance its performance and crop safety, pelargonic acid is neutralized with choline base, a basic component of lecithin, a vitamin-like essential nutrient naturally present in many plants, and it is widely used in the food and feed industry. Through this neutralization, the salt choline pelargonate is formed. In this configuration, TEMAP controls diseases without harming the plants, making it fit for agricultural use.

How is TEMAP® protecting your crop?

TEMAP is a biofungicide that works by disruption of fungal cell membranes. The product interacts with the fungal cell membrane of both spores and mycelium, leading to cell lysis, preventing germination and stopping the spread of the pathogen. This targeted mechanism of action ensures effective control while maintaining a low environmental impact and low risk of resistance occurrence. Bi-PA has co-financed since 2023 a joint PhD project in collaboration with Trento University and Fondazione Edmund Mach to investigate the mode of action of choline pelargonate

Target Crops and Diseases

TEMAP demonstrated strong efficacy in controlling fungal diseases, especially in rice, cereals, banana and fruit and vegetables. We have proven efficacy in rice against Sheath Blight (Rhizoctonia solani) and Blast (Pyricularia oryzae) and Septoria tritici in wheat.

Beyond these specific targets, TEMAP works on a broad range of other fungal pathogens, making it a versatile solution for protecting various crops against fungal threats. Bi-PA continues to explore further uses in field trials in Europe, the Americas and Asia with its commercial partners.
